Sisters of the Divine Compassion

Compassion Heals a World of Violence...

Membership in Divine Compassion

Since the founding of the congregation in 1886, the Sisters of the Divine Compassion have invited women and men to participate in our mission, our spirituality and our ministries.  Until 1981, the only way a person was formally recognized as a member of the Divine Compassion Community was through vowed membership.  Then in 1981, Associate membership was initiated with five women.  In the intervening years the Association has grown to over 60 women and men… and we continue to be open to emerging forms…

VOWED MEMBERSHIP

To be a Sister of the Divine Compassion is live the gospel call in service to the people of God.  The vows of poverty celibacy and obedience that we profess express our embrace of a life characterized by simple living, inclusive loving, and attentive listening.

After the example of Jesus and our founders, we are challenged to step out beyond our comfort zone and attend to the cry of the marginalized in our world ~ to see our culture, our society, our world and ourselves with new eyes, a ready heart and a courageous and eager spirit.

PROCESS OF INCORPORATION

To become a permanently vowed member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion takes at least eight years.   In each step of the process -- affiliation, candidacy, novitiate, temporary vows -- prospective members are drawn more and more deeply into congregational life.

If you are between the ages of 22 and 50, have thought about vowed life, and relish a challenge contact Sr. Susan Becker at 914-798-1109 or at sbecker@divinecompassion.org
